2) short story: Taking Care of You

“I thought I was dreaming when I first saw you," he said.

“How did you know it was me?” she asked. “I could have been anybody. A thief even.”

He smiled wearily. “I don’t know many thieves who would look at me with anxious eyes and then cry because I was sick,” he mumbled.

Is it possible for love to bloom, sight unseen? Juhi and Abhay are strangers who know each other better than they know themselves. One night changes the equation and the even tenor of their lives and puts all their doubts and fears to rest.

"I love the way you love, Meenu," he whispered, his eyes on hers. "Such loyalty, such passion..."

Meenakshi Sharma, an orphan, lives in Varanasi with her uncle, a chronic bachelor who wants her to become a professional musician. She unwillingly relocates to Delhi to study under a renowned musician for eight months. Staying for rent in the outhouse of the Agrawals, she meets Aditya Agrawal, an attractive young man brooding over the memories of his horrendous past. Pulled between her uncle's expectations of her and Aditya's love for her, Meenakshi struggles with her feelings. How can she disappoint her uncle who had devoted his entire life to her upbringing? How can she pretend to be blind to Aditya's feelings for her? A romance that moves between the alleys of the holy city of Varanasi and the modern city of Delhi.

Once Upon a Wedding (Part 1)

  1. Once Upon a Wedding (Part 1)

Khushi Kumari Gupta looked at Sasi Gupta, the kind man who had adopted her when she had been orphaned at the age of eight.
“Bol, bitiya, are you ready to marry him?” he asked.
Khushi parted her lips, but couldn’t make herself utter yes.
Buaji and amma nodded in her stead.
“Haan keh do, Khussi,” amma urged.
“You won’t find another boy like this, Titliya,” buaji said. “Haan keh do, Nandkisore.”
Khushi turned her head to look at her jiji who was smiling at her, waiting for her reply.
She looked at her amma’s anklets on her feet, praying, “Tell me what to do, please. He Devi Maiyya, raksha karna.”
“Why are you hesitating, Nandkisore? Do you think a prince is going to come on his white horse to rescue you?” buaji asked, fed up of waiting for a reply from an uncharacteristically silent niece.
“He is well-employed, decent. He has no parents to harass you after marriage. Say yes,” amma pressed.
Khushi looked at her babuji’s tired face, the grooves by his nose. She was his responsibility, a burden he needed to offload.
For her babuji, Khushi said softly, “I will marry Shyamji.”

The rest of the story will be posted in my new password-protected blog,

I have 250+ readers on this blog, but only about 20 of them bother to encourage and support me by buying my published works on which I spend months of my time and lots of effort. I am sure you can imagine how heartbreaking this is for me.

This new blog is an attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff. I know my well-wishers will stand by me and understand why I am doing this.

Happy New Year! Wishing all of you a wonderful year ahead.

  19. Hi, not exactly a new reader but haven't been confident enough to post my thoughts (very good thoughts mind you) on here. Found myself too nervous to do so but seeing as other people also feel nervous to post yet just go ahead and do it, i've found having to gather the courage and just post my thoughts.

I've found all your stories very worthy and very entertaining to read. They've made me laugh and cry, kept me on the edge of my seat and had me cheering for the happy endings you've given them! Thank you Smita-ji for all the stories you've given. Like Kiran, I also read Arshi stories only hence if you feel me worthy to have access then by all means do so. If not i'll only say its been a wonderful read through and wish you all the success in the future.

P.S: regarding your books, i live in the UK, so do you have any option for your UK readers wanting to buy your books?

    3. Thank you for the very quick reply; I've been wanting to read A Home for Meenakshi but wasn't sure if i could buy it. Could i receive your bank account details through email and pay straight into their please? If not then i'll try to see if i can get it through the site you've posted it up on to buy.

Thank you again and wish you a very Happy New Year 2016!

I know I am not regular at reading and commenting..I had enrolled for my dream course some months back and all those projects, research topics, thesaurus, preparations are tiring me out..Not to mention the most times'wifi unavailability' here.
I am not an avid reader and started reading fictions because of Arnav and Khushi.I had joined for NET coaching and the preparations keep me busy and occupied almost the whole day(except 5 hours sleep).

I don't know if I would be lucky to read your stories in 2016 :)
All the best for you, once again..
Would surely come and drop messages here whenever I can..
Will miss to read"the ArShi" created by you..Would inform Megha about the note, though she is not at all active in IF all thanks to the classes..

  59. Smita, I read "Waiting for You" all through Sunday morning. Couldn't put it down at all. I downloaded it on to the phone and kept sneaking a read through breakfast preps and morning chores. :)

I had heard about families getting a couple together but this was an entire village - plus their animals - rooting for this couple. Too good :)

The story was interesting, entertaining and had me completely involved to the point that I found myself applauding some of the characters and rolling my eyes in exasperation at others.
The very descriptive narrations of life in a small Kerala village were particularly interesting. We are all so comfortable and familiar with urban settings that this was a refreshing change.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Waiting..." Smita and I do hope you write and sell more and more books.

  63. I have never commented here before...mainly because I didn't have a separate IF email ID and I got too lazy to create a new one. Now I have.

Geez, guys!! What part of Smita doesn't want to share the password to her blog UNLESS you buy her book don't you understand? She couldn't have made it more clear!

It's HER work and she has made a decision. We have to respect it! After all she has poured her blood and sweat into her book. And she has given us many, many, many ArHi stories...for free!! She has updated ALL her stories almost everyday!!! Which other writer on the forum has done it? And done it so consistently? So stop being greedy!

The ball is in your court now. If you want to read more of her ArHi stories, buy her book. If not, MOVE ON! If this is how Smita has decided to market her work, it's her prerogative! No one else's! She is a small time (but great!) writer who is trying to make her mark as a professional author. If you love her work so much, encourage her by buying her book.

Finally, Smita, it was a pleasure! Your stories will always be close to my heart. Sorry to have been blunt here. Didn't mean to spread negativity on your otherwise clean blog!

    1. Thank you, my dear! It has been a tough couple of weeks of answering mails from readers who want complete access to my works for free even after my pointing out that I don't intend to do that any more. I don't know which part of my note they didn't get. They have a choice. If they don't read anything other than ArHi, it is high time they moved on to other writers who write ArHi on IF or on their free blogs as I did for four years. I am no longer available to provide this service for free. I intend to write only for those readers who are willing to support me when I publish a book or a short story. AND I can't and won't publish anything on ArHi.
I am not taking down this blog.

    3. Oh, you're welcome, hon!

When I first read your note, honestly, I was a bit indignant! I was like 'how could she do this? and force her IPKKND readers to buy some of her other work?' But when I calmed down and thought about it, I realized it was actually a brilliant idea. Who better than your regular ArHi readers to encourage you? We already love your writing and the way you weave stories after stories. How will a relative stranger to your works know your potential as a writer? Right? So it's only fair! Yes, some of the readers here are very young and students and they might not be able to afford Rs. 500. But then again, you've given them enough stories. I don't think you can write for them forever. So it's better they find more stories to read on IF.

      Ok, I'm just ranting now.

I'll send you the receipt of my purchase to your email.

      Love,
      Limon.

And the site is 'Verified by Visa' which means your personal and card information are very secure.

    Hope this helps.

I would have loved to make a payment dear if it was an arshi story...as i know I'll read it...because if am not reading a book but simply paying it just for a rule...it's nothing but a wastage of money...and disrespecting money itself....which along with me i believe even you won't appreciate....because i do believe even you value for money....so since there's no other options left for me....or given by you....i can only congratulate uou for ur new book n ur future ventures. ....i pray to god for all the success u deserve n wish.....hod bless you dear...if u ever write anything on arshi for we arshi fans....whether open to all or payable please do let me know in IF..... my name there is cute_monaya_fan ☺

  80. Soooo, I've been reading some of the comments here and I think Limoncello has absolutely nailed it.

Smita is an amazingly talented writer who has given us years of enjoyment through her ArHi stories. Show me one reader who has not enjoyed her Arnav-Khushi series.

Come on, ladies, don't you think we can return some of that love and show our appreciation for her hard work by purchasing her e-books?

Smita, I've told you before that it took your note to jolt me out of my lethargy and quickly purchase the books. And it was not so much the threat of being shut out of the new blog as a desire to read your new stories. I love how you write. It has a simplicity and sweetness that is immensely appealing.

I have really enjoyed "Taking Care of You", "Waiting for You" and "A Home for Meenakshi". They were all evocative, "dil ko chhoo dene wali" stories. Your attention to the smallest detail brings every setting to life...be it the Ganga-ghats of "Meenakshi" or the traditional rites of a Kerala wedding ceremony in "Waiting".

Yet, having said that I have to say you are a bad influence on me ;) I spent the past two Sundays completely engrossed in the books. I can proudly say I was a bad Indian housewife who neglected all her chores and did nothing but read...hahaha.

    Looking forward to reading more...

  81. Smitaji, I don't know if I'll be able to do justice to your story, but nevertheless, here goes.

I completed "Waiting for you" in a rush, because, I didn't have the time to read it in one go. So, as is my habit I read it again(and again). Way to go - It was fantastic.

To those familiar with life in a village, the story is a nostalgic trip down the memory lane and to city slickers like me, it is a fascinating glimpse into a small slice of our world where time seems to stand still and relationships are valued.

The story reminds me of a quote ( I don't know whose) : "The best thing about living in a small village is when you are not sure about what's going on in your own life someone in the village usually does." Everyone in the village, it would seem, subscribes to this philosophy.

The romance and the angst between the lead characters is aided by the understated humour and wonderfully crafted supporting cast ( including the four legged variety.) I got so involved in the story that I couldn't wait for the 3 years to be over.

If your Arshi stories are a spirited jaunt between Delhi and Lucknow, "Waiting for You" is a leisurely boat ride along the backwaters of Kerala.

Again, at the risk of sounding repetitive, TAKE A BOW, SMITAJI. You are truly a gifted writer and I wish you a great future.

    1. I too couldn't wait for the three years to be over, KC. I just wanted to jump to the very end and read how these sweet lovers finally found their 'happily ever after'. But I did not cave in to the temptation. I had wholly committed myself to reading every word .... even all the 'a's , 'and's and 'the's.... and I stayed true to my undertaking... And it was such a beautiful read, from the word go.

    2. Hey there, nice to hear from you. I try very hard but alas, I jump to the end especially in the 'whodunit' variety. I can't stand the suspense. But in this case I resisted mightily and succeeded.

    3. I also try not to miss even single word, and of course waiting for happy ever after and in the same time wanting desperately that this story don't end soon)))))) I have btw some difficulties with hindi words so I couldn't tell that I don't miss a word, but I'm trying my best to find them and fully understand:))))))))))

    4. It's so pure and gentle, tender story that each part of it brings a smile on my lips )))))

  83. 'Waiting For You' in a nutshell. :)

Anyone who has read Smita's works, knows her stories are about love, trust, families and their dynamics and above all a sweet 'happily ever after'. They are packed with positivity and invariably have undertones of some serious thought-provoking issues. All plated and served with a liberal sprinkling of mirth and humour.

'Waiting For You" is no exception. It is the story of Gouri- a lovable eighteen year old girl, right on the brink of womanhood, who falls head over heels for Shivettan - a handsome doctor who hails from her village and is eight years her senior. It is the story of a young love coming of age. Shivettan's love, so selfless and wondrous that it takes a conscious decision of letting her go, just because that is the right thing to do .... for her. So unconditional, that his love transcends the chasms of distance and time. While miles separate them, she continues to be his want and need and he never ceases to be her protector.

And it is about the virgin love of an eighteen year old that knows only giving, without claiming anything in return. Her heartfelt love for him, always puts him first. A spark which begins as a hopeless crush evolves into a feeling that becomes the very essence of her being.

Set against the backdrop of lush Kerala, 'Waiting For You' delivers everything that Smita's words always promise. Sweet romance, a passionate declaration of love, hard-wearing relationships, close-knit families, festivites, fun and frolic! In this story she paints an ethereal picture of the magic and enigma that is 'God's own country'.

If one is a fan of Smita's work, this book is definitely worth a shot.
They say, 'When you know why you like someone, it is a crush. When you have no reason or explanation, it is love!!'
Gouri and Shivettan's story is a beautiful embodiment of this quote. :)

Smi, I waited for 'Waiting For You' for like... forever!!.... and now when I have read it, all I want to say is that it was absolutely worth the wait. <3

    1. Priya, you certainly have a way with words. Wonderful synopsis. I felt the title was very apt. It seems everyone was waiting.
Shiva was waiting for Gouri to grow up, Gouri was waiting for Shiva to reciprocate her love, the entire village was waiting for these two to get their act together, the animals were waiting for Gouri's return, their respective families were waiting to welcome them as son-in-law and daughter-in-law and we were waiting for the book.
